MAX

When Declan stopped by, it was to have me pack a bag. Apparently, while Ten was out on their mission for two days, I was to stay with Six on their couch. While it was kind of annoying to play the role of the insolent child who couldn’t be left alone to her own devices, it was more so annoying because Atlas was still ignoring me and Reza took every opportunity possible to gloat about that very fact. And because she was always around, either hanging off Atlas’s arm or trying to suck up to Declan, we couldn’t speak freely about anything important.

For five days, I focused on training, trying desperately to stay under Tarren and Alleva’s radar whenever possible. Neither of them missed an opportunity to critique my form or comment on my recklessness whenever they could. It was like they could somehow tell that I was a threat to The Guild, that I didn’t really belong here, that I wasn’t one of them.

In the evenings, I walked the grounds with Dec, Eli, Izzy, or Ro, trying desperately to feel a connection to the mystery magic. I kept it to myself that the only magical draw I felt on campus was to the members of Six. Everything else was a dead end. The thought of disappointing a man as infamous as Lucifer was almost as daunting as the possibility of someone at Headquarters finding out what I really was. Each direction I looked, I was surrounded by enemies, people who could crush me in the palm of their hands if they wanted.

Demon powers were overrated—all they came with was more danger and deceit.

While my search for the magic failed, the others tried to pick up the slack.

Atlas tried to reach the lower levels of the lab on his own, only to come to the same conclusion as Eli—his clearance had been removed. And, what was worse, Seamus wasn’t able to do anything about it for either of them. When they confronted him, he’d said that Tarren, Alleva, and some of the members of the lab had tightened security after Darius’s escape—it was out of his hands and he was already on thin ice as it was. Even he’d lost access to some of the rooms deep in the lab.

Tarren’s response, when Atlas asked him about the demotion, was that he needed to find a way to “earn it,” whatever the hell that meant.

Which was to say, we were all more or less screwed and stuck in a metaphorical limbo until something changed. The problem was that when it came to life or death shit, ‘something changing’ could usher in a new catastrophe.

Until I could figure out a new plan, all that was left was for me to run through everything Eli had told me on repeat.

The second he dropped me off the night of our excursion, I ran upstairs and puked, before spending the night curled up on the foot of Ro’s bed while he rubbed my back and swore on his life that Cy had never shared any of that with him.
